The historic Emerald Hill stretch, opposite Orchard Central, features a row of just 150 1900’s conserved residential terrace houses.
Many of them were built at the turn of the 20th century by Singapore’s aristocracy and nouveaux riches, , the wealthy Chinese and Straits-Chinese merchants. It became a fashionable abode for Peranakans who had settled in Singapore for more than 50 years. Their dwellings combined European Doric columns, shuttered windows and brightly coloured ceramic tiles with flower and bird motifs, creating an architectural melange commonly referred to as Chinese Baroque.
About 15 per cent to 20 per cent of the residents there today are owners, with the remaining homes tenanted.
The residents of Emerald Hill live in style, with modern furnishings set against original Peranakan floral motifs carved on the walls of the houses, which range from two to four storeys. Traditional wooden cabinets with gold designs and sealed air wells in the middle of spacious courtyards typical of traditional shophouses also feature.
Emerald Hill is also conveniently located right in the heart of Singapore's shopping and tourist belt. A whole host of amenities lies at your door step.
